School to launch Duke of Edinburgh's Award

​King Edward VI High School is proud to announce that we are now licensed to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to our students.
 
This award is widely recognised by employers and is considered the world’s leading youth achievement award, offering young people the opportunity to take part in a wide range of life-changing activities and challenges.

Introducing the award represents part of King Edward’s commitment to offer our students opportunities to be the best they can be, push their personal boundaries and maximise their life chances.
 
We are offering the opportunity to complete the Bronze Award to our Year 9 and Year 10 students.
 
The award requires those taking part to complete 4 sections:
 
•  Skills (learning a skill at least once a week)
•  Physical (participating in a physical activity at least once a week)
•  Volunteering (being involved in an activity that benefits others once a week)
•  Expedition (completing a training and assessed 2-day hike with an overnight camp)
 
The Skills, Physical and Volunteering sections must be completed once a week with two of these sections to be completed over three months and one over six months. Students will be advised on their selection of activities and monitored by teachers throughout the delivery of the award programme. However, completion of these sections will primarily be the responsibility of the students taking part.
 
As we are starting the delivery of the award part way through the academic year we are keen to start the programme as soon as possible. Students have been asked to identify one section that can begin immediately.
 
To provide more details to parents and students, there will be an information evening on Wednesday 9th March at 7.00pm in the School Hall.
 
Representatives of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Horizon Expeditions, who will deliver the Expedition section of the award, will be in attendance to answer any queries you may have.
 
As final arrangements have yet to be made for the practice and qualifying expeditions it is not yet possible to confirm the overall cost of completing the Bronze Award, however we expect this to be in the region of £150.
