Why?

In 2018, Ofsted inspectors found "Effective teaching means that pupils in key stages 3 and 4 now make good progress" and that "this is a GOOD school".

I am incredibly proud of our students and staff who have worked hard to produce these results and get the best out of our young people.

Stretch and challenge

Our lessons in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Music, Drama, Art, Languages, PE, Design Technology, Computer Science, Food Studies and much more offer academic rigour and opportunity to pupils of all abilities.

Our use of “Stretch & Challenge” activities in every lesson is getting the best out of our pupils and helping them make the progress they have been making.

Enrichment opportunities

However there is more to our school than academia alone.

As a school we offer excellent enrichment opportunities to extend learning and skills beyond the classroom! From the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme to our own garden project.

We are in the process of establishing our Refereeing Academy and have already had great success with our STEM Club, giving our pupils opportunity in science and engineering, not to mention the achievements made by our Young Enterprise team in a national business & enterprise competition and the great success of our school sports teams.

We care

At the heart of all we do is the pupil. King Edward VI has always believed that every child matters and our pastoral team is built around that.

For our young people to succeed in life, they need to be happy and get a love of learning. Beyond the classroom we have a whole team of staff and pupils who are there to support your child, whatever the challenge.

All our Year 7 form groups have fully-trained student mentors working with them (Hear4U), offering them guidance and support. Our Safeguarding team has strong links to many outside agencies so as to give our pupils the best possible support - there is always someone who will listen and give your child the pastoral and personal support they need in life, as well as the academic help.

In 2018, Ofsted said, "Relationships are strong throughout the school. Teachers know their pupils well. Pupils trust their teachers and other adults. Consequently, they feel safe and well supported."

For all our pupils

King Edward VI High School works hard for all our pupils, but especially to meet the needs of pupils with a special educational need or disability. Our team of mentors will support your child throughout their high school journey and can offer advice to parents/carers.

In 2018, Ofsted said, "Pupils who have special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities make very good progress. They are well taught and provided with excellent support."

Transition: we go further

We understand how stressful the transition from primary school to high school can be for both you and your child.

We believe we go much further than many schools by putting in place all sorts of strategies to get to know your child and help them get to know our school.

We put on Enterprise Days for Year 6 in October; our Transition Leader, Mr Lomas, visits each primary school as early as April, to meet with pupils and staff and get to know each child’s individual needs before coming to us in September.

As well as Induction Day and Taster Days, we also have a dedicated Consultation Day for parents to meet their child’s form tutor in advance and discuss individual needs and support; not to mention our Summer Club every August—a chance for our new Year 7s to meet their classmates, have fun and get to know their new school!
